about SAORI

All flowers are beautiful, even though each individual flower is different in form and color. Because of this difference, “all are good”.  Because everything has the same life, life cannot be measured by a yardstick. It is this individuality that makes everything meaningful and the uniqueness of each thread that creates the tapestry of life.”       – Misao Jo

SAORI philosophy –  simple. No mistakes, no rules, just joyful weaving. SAORI is not  a fad or a style. It is an expression of the innate creativity residing in each of us.  It is based on the weaving methods developed by Misao Jo in Japan. She began weaving in her 50’s, and inspired weavers for nearly 50 years and her spirit continues to inspire weavers worldwide. We are encouraged to explore our true self at the loom and find the beauty in all creative endeavours.

Weaving yourself – simple and difficult at the same time. To weave with intention and without pre planning allows creative expression and exploration without boundaries. Each project is unique and a joyful expression of its creator. In SAORI weaving, we are not bound by rules or levels, patterns or skills checklists. We are liberated by asking “what if?”. What if I add more color? What if I add more texture? What if I add more depth? What if I vary tension?

No limits, no experience required.  Beginning and experienced weavers learn together. Looms are prepared and waiting for the weavers. Technical instruction is learned in minutes, allowing the weaver to embrace the creative flow. This style  of learning allows all individuals to be weavers and creators. It is perfectly suited to all abilities, genders and ages.
